Meet the Team: Hugh Stewart, Regional Senior Estates & Facilities Manager

Hugh Stewart is the Regional Senior Estates & Facilities Manager at Kathryn Homes, responsible for ensuring the estate is kept in top condition and creating the best possible environment for the people in our care.

1.   What do you like about working at Kathryn Homes?

My favourite part about working at Kathryn Homes is the people - our residents, staff, and everyone I meet along the way.

Each day is different in this role, and I love the variety of it. I take pride in knowing that what I am doing is making a positive impact on others.

2.   What are the main responsibilities of your role?

Some of my day-to-day duties include ensuring the estate is kept in top condition and creating the best possible environment for the people in our care.

It is important that our residents feel completely at home in their surroundings and part of my job is to ensure all 12 buildings are comfortable, homely, and practical.

You have to be able to change your priorities with quite short notice sometimes, and I enjoy the challenge.

3.   Tell us a bit about your career track record and experience.

I began my career as an engineer on nuclear and conventional submarines, before progressing to Navigating Officer.

As you can imagine, there was a lot of travel involved with working on the submarines and my wife and I wanted to be with our wider family, so we settled in Northern Ireland. The children also benefited from the great schooling system here, so it was the right choice for us all.

After we moved to Northern Ireland, I started work at Bombardier and then moved to banking, and eventually healthcare.

Since then, I have held senior roles in both the public and private sector with a focus on Estates and Facilities Management.

4.   What are your qualifications?

I have a HND in Electronic Engineering and Process Control, as well as NEBOSH Health & Safety Management.

I am a trained International Fire Risk Assessor, and an Environmental Management System and Quality Management System auditor, which serves as a useful benchmark when assessing our homes.

I am also a member of The Institute of Healthcare Engineering and Estate Management, which is the UK's largest specialist Institute for the Healthcare Estates Sector.

5.   What are your hobbies outside of work?

In my spare time I like hill walking and keeping fit. I am also an active member in my local community and church, so I enjoy getting involved in those as much as I can.
